An
online overview about the tall ship Dunbrody.
The Dunbrody is a replica of the original ship of that name, a 19th Century three masted Barque which carried emigrants from Ireland to North America during the Great Famine.
Pembrokeshire and the Dunbrody are intertwined throughout history to this present day. The Captain of the ship from 1845-1855 was the Welsh Mariner, William John Williams of St Davids, a man known for his compassion and kindness who frequently sailed her from Milford Haven as she traded around the world.
In the late 1990's Pembrokeshire College renewed this counties links with the ship when students and staff spent many days at New Ross assissting in the building of this replica.
Even now the Mitec centre of the College is working on a ship's boat for the Dunbrody, which will, when completed, be presented to the ship.
That is not all of the story, however, as skills and experience from Pembrokeshire are continually being used to develop and improve the ship and its operation.
The Dunbrody visited Pembrokeshire on an emotional maiden voyage arriving on the 23rd June 2006.
She stayed in Milford Haven for a week, where she was visited by over 1000 schoolchildren and thousands of enthusiastic and sometimes very emotional visitors.
Whilst she was in the Haven she took passengers out for three days on "day sails" and even though the ship was still going through the process of finalising her rigging and developing her crew, she was still able to give people a taste of what it was like to be aboard a ship like this.

"We had a super day on June 28th, thank you!"
This was one of many emailsand letters receievd from "passengers" who enjoyed their day out with the Dunbrody.
Thank you for all your support in taking part in this initiation into Tall Ship life by the Dunbrody and when she returns in 2008 she will be a more mature and prepared ship and even though her maiden voyage has now been accomplished she will give her passengers the chance of even greater excitement when they sail around the Pembrokeshire coasts.
