Tall Ship Visit

The Grand Turk

Grand Turk was built 1996-7 and is designed for film work, day sailing and ‘upmarket’ corporate hospitality.   Externally, the ship is an exact replica of a 1780’s Royal Navy frigate and as such, used extensively by film and television companies. The ship is probably best known in Britain for her role in the ‘Hornblower’ and ‘Longitude’ television series.   Whilst externally, the ship is a faithful replica of a British man’o’war – she’s actually based on HMS Blandford, a naval frigate built in 1775, below deck the vessel offers a spacious accommodation for corporate events, formal dinners and receptions.   There’s also a fascinating exhibition showing ‘Life under Sail’’ in the eighteenth century.   The ship’s 26-strong crew are in period costumes throughout any event and add to the entertainment of visitors by informally demonstrating ropework, hammock slinging and other traditional ‘customs, encouraging guests to try for themselves. The ship’s cannons can be fired either when underway or at the berth.

The ship holds full MCA certification as a passenger vessel and can carry up to 120 persons for sailing trips in estuary or river, or 60 persons offshore.  Berthed, the ship can accommodate up to 250 persons for a buffet reception on deck, or seat up to 120 for a formal dinner below deck.  Catering for long days at sea when filming involves feeding both the ships and technical crews, plus performers, hence the ship’s kitchen/galley is fully equipped to commercial standards.  The main decks can be covered in the event of inclement weather when the ship is berthed.

July 28th

Aberaeron Bi-Centenary

As a small Georgian seaport, located in Cardigan Bay between Aberystwyth and New Quay, we are celebrating the 200th anniversary of the founding of our town by Act of Parliament, dated August 1st, 1807.

Aberaeron is a very hospitable place and the Aberaeron Yacht Club, in conjunction with the 2007 Committee and members of the West Wales Maritime Heritage Society, are arranging a series of events to mark our progress through two centuries.

Saturday, July 28th is the launch of the week with a Maritime Heritage day, involving activities on and off the water. We invite any members of your organisation to join us, preferably by boat, and can offer free harbour accommodation for visitors. Tan sails and traditional rigs are the order of the day!

Aberaeron was a trading port and we hope to have some token 'cargo' carried from Liverpool/N.Wales, from Ireland and from Bristol/South Wales as part of the arrival of small fleets, cruising in company!

Aberaeron would be delighted to welcome you all to Aberaeron where beer, shanties and tradition are the order of the day!

Our schooners and small coastal steamships provided all our transport needs in days of old! Help us to rediscover that spirit!

Peter Lloyd Harvey.
